Workshop description
FileMaker 7 introduced a new paradigm regarding the ‘relationship graph’. In one of the very first projects I worked on in FileMaker 7, I came to realize that having some kind of structure and organization was essential to building an easily-understood and extensible foundation.
That first project was like spaghetti code, with table occurrences strung together randomly and named without any real conventions. I quickly realized that some order was needed. The FileMaker community quickly found a way to organize and group table occurrences. One model of organization that came into prominence is the ‘anchor-buoy’. Another model (‘Session’) is one where the user has a single record which is called their ‘session record’. The FOCUS framework can work these (and other) methods, but primarily it is based on the Session model.
What you’ll learn in this class are the benefits and drawbacks in working with a Session model versus an Anchor-Buoy model. We will be using a foundation framework called ‘FOCUS’ to demonstrate these concepts, and you will be given a download link prior to the workshop that will provide a free copy of the FOCUS framework to explore. We’ll describe the naming conventions used in FOCUS as well as the underlying philosophy of the FOCUS framework, and how it can help you and your team be more productive in your FileMaker development.
Who should attend this session:
Anyone interested in learning how they can turbo boost their FileMaker development, and for those who have been contemplating conversion instead of a rebuild.
This session is for you!
Instructor
Vince Menanno, Senior FileMaker Developer
Vince has been working with FileMaker for over 15 years, and built Inspector, the leading FileMaker diagnostic tool for developers. He’s an expert in advanced developer techniques and he has been a speaker at several FileMaker Developer Conferences. Vince created Dragon Web Surveys and helped architect Web Services Plugin. He also built FOCUS, which Vince and other developers use as a foundation for solutions created for major clients.
