This is an intensive, hands-on workshop, with a minimum of three and no more than seven students permitted per session.

Workshop Description

Learn the secrets of custom FileMaker development from Beezwax, a leading FileMaker development firm whose many clients include Kaiser Permanente, Adobe, Children's Miracle Network and many other great organizations. You won't just be learning about FileMaker in a theoretical or academic sense; this is a working session, so you'll apply what you learn in the context of your own database, right in the class! This workshop features plenty of lab time with personalized one-on-one attention from the trainer - a real live FileMaker expert who will help you successfully resolve issues specific to your database project.

Includes a free one-on-one pre-workshop phone consultation with instructor Rick Aguirre for all registered attendees. This call is used to understand your individual needs, assess your specific project, and tailor the class to ensure you get the most out of it.

Instructor
Rick Aguirre, Senior FileMaker Developer

Rick Aguirre is a senior certified FileMaker developer at Beezwax. For over 15 years he has developed and maintained large-scale custom FileMaker solutions for a wide variety of clients including small businesses and large-scale enterprises. Companies seek his expertise when their FileMaker projects are mission critical and require a deep understanding of FileMaker's nuances and capabilities.

Rick was one of two Beezwax developers on the 18-person international team that FileMaker, Inc. assembled to establish naming conventions for the Industry. Additionally, Rick was the Technical Editor of the book "FileMaker Pro 7 Advanced for Windows and Macintosh: Visual Quickpro Guide", published by Peachpit Press.

Prerequisites

This is an intermediate/advanced course and you are expected to:

1) Bring your own database project on your own laptop.* Have you ever taken a class and said to yourself, "I learned a lot, hopefully I'll find the time to apply what I've learned?" By actually working on your own files, your ability to contextualize what you learn is enhanced, rather than just learning FileMaker theories. Please bring an ERD, as it can be extremely helpful for visualizing.

2) Have knowledge of FileMaker basics as will not be covering them in class -- such as defining fields, layouts and writing scripts. Knowledge of FileMaker version 3 or later is required; knowledge of FileMaker 9 is not.

3) OPTIONAL: Pre-workshop questionnaire and telephone interview allows the instructor to focus the class on the needs of the students:

  • A) Assess your knowledge of FileMaker to see if the class is right for you;
  • B) Become familiar with your database solution and how you'd like to improve it; and
  • C) Gather information about how we can better tailor the class for you by focusing on specific areas (for example, if you really want to learn more about FileMaker 9's Custom Functions feature).
You may take the optional pre-workshop online questionnaire before or after registering.
