Amazon Web Services (AWS)

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is Amazon’s cloud computing platform. AWS technology is implemented at server farms worldwide and maintained by the Amazon subsidiary. Fees are based on a combination of usage, the hardware/OS/software/networking features chosen by the subscriber, required availability, redundancy, security, and service options. Subscribers can pay for a single virtual AWS computer, a dedicated physical computer, or clusters. Amazon provides security for subscribers’ systems as part of the subscription agreement. AWS operates from many global geographical regions, including several in North America.

AWS can likely be considered the leading cloud platform. It boasts an IT Infrastructure used by millions of customers, including a vast array of the largest enterprises in the US and worldwide. In contrast with competing cloud platforms, AWS is especially noteworthy for its thoroughly modularized and implementation-agnostic components. For example, Amazon’s lambda functions — the doorway to customization of its vast array of services — can be written in a wide array of languages, including JavaScript, Ruby, Swift, or Python.
